About the Sika Deer

Sika deer are either small or medium-sized, depending on where they are living. They have very small heads and short legs. They prefer to live in forested areas and migrate seasonally in mountainous areas. The primary threats to Sika deer are habitat loss, hunting for their meat and antler velvet, and pollution. Sika deer’s name comes from “shika”, the Japanese word for deer. They are known for making a wide range of vocal sounds that can range from barks to groans to whistling cries.
